Summary of Job:
Provide for the humane care and excellent quality of life for all animals in the shelter. Duties include, but not limited to, cleaning, feeding, watering, and monitoring the animal's health and behavior. Assist with adoptions and lost and found. Educate the public on responsible pet ownership and promote and support the LA/SPCA's programs and mission.


Essential Functions:
• Humane care of shelter animals including cleaning, feeding, watering, and monitoring health and behavior.
• Administer vaccinations and perform heartworm testing.
• Assist with euthanasia and perform euthanasia once certified.
• Humanely handle deceased animals and loading crematorium.
• Humanely handle severely injured sick and abused/neglected animals.
• Humanely handle aggressive animals, wildlife and livestock.
• General cleaning and upkeep of interior and exterior shelter spaces.
• Educating the public on responsible pet care and promote spaying and neutering.
• Maintain a professional attitude at all times.
• Report to work in extreme weather conditions such as but not limited to hurricanes, flooding and ice/snow.
• Position is considered "Essential" in emergencies and/or disaster situations.
• Become certified in euthanasia and perform euthanasia upon request.
• Maintain confidentiality regarding all cases.
• Perform all other duties as necessary and required
• Treat all animals humanely, properly, and with compassion at all times, regardless of the situation or circumstance and promoting a humane and caring attitude toward all animals.
• Maintain a professional and friendly demeanor and provides good customer service.
• Works courteously and cooperatively with other staff members and volunteers.
• Maintain confidentiality regarding all cases and LA/SPCA information.
• Other duties as requested by Supervisor

Education and/or Experience:

  • Must have a high school diploma or G.E.D.

 Minimum Qualifications (or skills and knowledge):

  • Must be able to pass a criminal background check and pre-employment physical and substance screening
  • Team-focused attitude.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to report to work as early as 6:00am and end as late as 6:00pm, weekends and holidays.
  • Mental and physical flexibility is a must.
