This is a seasonal summer position with the potential to move to a permanent position.


Summary of Job:

Oversees the maintenance and appearance of the grounds and facilities including overseeing capital projects, scheduled maintenance and safety inspections. Ensures that needed supplies are available and housed in a manner that is organized and safe. Ensures that all equipment, machinery and vehicles are in good working condition. Manages the facilities staff and vendor relationships.


Essential Duties:

  • Manages the annual capital maintenance budget and monitors progress on related capital projects, reporting back to CAO
  • Serves as main point of contact with outside vendors for supplies, repairs and other services; negotiates pricing for approval by CAO
  • Recruits, trains and supervises maintenance personnel. 
  • Sets and approves schedules to ensure maximum efficiency and effectiveness of maintenance personnel.  Assigns tasks to maintenance workers based on urgency and skill level.
  • Places orders for cleaning and maintenance products, while evaluating cost options to ensure best possible pricing.
  • Addresses all routine and intermediate electrical and plumbing repairs.
  • Manages cleaning contract vendor including advising CAO of service changes
  • Conducts daily, weekly and monthly walkthroughs to evaluate maintenance and janitorial needs of the facility.
  • Maintains all equipment and machinery in good working condition including scheduling safety inspections
  • Maintains grounds including landscaping, fencing and other outdoor structures; manages lawn service contract vendor
  • Registers all vehicles and keeps inspections up to date; maintains records to prove vehicles are in compliance with all state and federal regulations
  • Has a basic understanding of vehicle systems and technology and ensures vehicles are properly maintained, including scheduling regular maintenance
  • Responsible for all deliveries, ensuring they are accurate, signed for and properly placed
  • Maintains on-call status in the event of a maintenance emergency.
  • Maintains and manages inventory of disaster supplies and equipment
  • Takes appropriate action to provide for animal comfort and security of facility in extremes of weather
  • Available to drive for evacuations or for short animal transports (1 day or less)
  • Creates and updates department Standard Operations Manual.
  • Treats all animals humanely, properly, and with compassion at all times, regardless of the situation or circumstance and promoting a humane and caring attitude toward all animals.
  • Maintains a professional and friendly demeanor and provides good customer service.
  • Works courteously and cooperatively with other staff members and volunteers.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding all cases and LA/SPCA information.
  • Other duties as requested by the CEO or CAO.


Education and/or Experience:

  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED; some college preferred
  • Requires at least five (5) years of facility maintenance/janitorial experience
  • Minimum of two (2) years supervisory experience of maintenance/janitorial staff


Minimum Qualifications (or skills and knowledge):

  • Ability to analyze information and make decisions based on needs and budget concerns
  • Ability to read building plans
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Organizational skills and problem-solving skills
  • Team-focused attitude
  • Flexibility in schedule and on-call status as needed
  • Must be able to pass a criminal background check and pre-employment physical and substance screening
  • Must possess a valid driver's license, and a clean driving record.
  • Position is considered essential during city-wide evacuations (meaning the employee will be required to report to the shelter during an evacuation).
  • Knowledge of OSHA safety requirements
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality


Desired Qualifications (or skills and knowledge):

  • Possess a valid forklift certification
  • Possess a CDL


Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to drive a large capacity vehicle, forklift, and other machinery
  • Should not be allergic to animals; must be able to work around all animals.
  • Must be able to work with industrial strength cleaners and disinfectants.
  • Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds; push and pull heavy objects; bend, twist, reach; perform strenuous physical activities including frequent walking and running, standing, bending and stooping. 


Working Environment: (or Working Conditions)

  • Potentially subject to animal bites and scratches. 
  • Works in an area with a high noise level.
